The Great Compromise

It is early November, otherwise known as prime hunting season in Pennsylvania. So, needless to say it is a girls weekend in our household. And by girls, I mean the nugget (aka my daughter, Avery) and myself .

My best girl!
My best girl!

My appreciation and understanding of hunting is probably as deep as my husband’s understanding of running. Minimal….at best.

With a one-year-old, it takes constant compromise and planning to make sure that we both have time for our personal passions. Especially when those passions can be quite the time suck. Many dinner conversations are spent trying to convince one another of why exactly we love to do what we do.

My husband is all, “The cycle of the moon and the rut are converging yadda, yadda, yadda…the deer will be moving….yadda, yadda, yadda.”

I smile and listen(ish) and say something like, “That’s great babe. Hope you get one this weekend!” All while thinking, how much longer is hunting season? When was the last time he actually shot a deer? 5 years ago? No, more like 6.

And then I’m all, “I just put my new training plan on the fridge, but since I won’t be racing until the spring it’s really the pre-training plan to the actually training plan.” I also tell riveting and engrossing stories about my long runs. I’m sure that he is on the edge of his seat as I attempt to break down my paces and the elevation gains of my route.

After every race, his reaction is always the same, “Did you win?” and “That’s a long a## way to run for a free banana.” No, I didn’t win…and yes, babe, it is indeed a long way to run. And it.is.awesome!!!!

The point is that we don’t have to always understand each other’s passions to support them. I know that hunting is as much a part of my husband and his happiness as running is to me and mine. This, in turn, makes us better spouses and parents.

So, I’m just going to sit here at 7:30 on a Friday night with a glass of wine (or three) and realize that compromise is love.

Yes, those are ice cubes. Yes, I am basic. Don't care.

Have a great weekend!
